Old Door...New Table

The first time our realtor (Kristen) brought us to see this house, when we were out on the back porch we were all talking about having a big outdoor dining table and enjoying meals outside.  Someone suggested having an old door as a table.  

Now that our list of MUST-DOs is getting shorter and we needed some new chairs for the office (which reminds me I need to take some pictures of the office), I went to look at a cool consignment/antique store called Finders Keepers.  While I was there I found some cool red chairs and blue stool that I thought would look great at the patio dining table, which we had not bought or even started to think about building yet.  After sending pictures and talking to Keith at work we decided to get the chairs and the stool.  I also bought a chair for the office for $7 and took a ton of picture of other things I wanted to buy.  While checking out I told the lady working there about our idea of making an old door into a table.   She should me the only door they had, it was cool but two narrow.  She suggested going Habitat for Humanity ReSale to look to old doors.   About 30min after I left Keith called me to tell me that his friend at work told him Habitat for Humanity ReSale had a ton of doors.  That night we google how to make an old door a table. We decided to follow these instructions. 

Keith and I both started getting really excited about going to look for an old door.  Keith has a lot of comp time off because of the turnaround so he took off Friday.  We dropped Grady off at school then went to the ReSale found a cool door and then we went to Home Depot to get the supplies.   

Our first idea was to fill the top of the door with Clear Table Top Epoxy like you see bar tops and table tops in restaurants.  But the Super Glaze they sell at Home depot was $21 for only 1 quart and we knew we would need a lot more then that.  So we called around and looked online.  But once we really measured the square feet of all the windows and panels it looked like we would need at LEAST 4 gallons to fill them in and them more to cover the table.  At the best price we could find it was going to cost is $220 or more.  

Saturday we built the door following these instructions.  But we used  1x3 inch lumber for the apron/rectangular box.  We wanted to get bansters for the legs but at $64 each we decided 4x4" lumber would look GREAT :) 

We used white 1-2-3 Primer Sealer that we had left over to paint the apron and legs.

Hardware: $24

We are calling to get a couple more quotes on glass for the top.  But right now it looks like tempered glass is going to be $150 delivered in town with cut outs so we can keep the cool door handle.
